New York – New York: AAG

Liker godt denne formen for presentasjoner!

Cartography of indoor maps for real-time use

Alexander S. Nossum, Terje Midtbø

In recent years indoor positioning systems have developed extensively. Today, off-the-shelf positioning systems are available that use WiFi network signals to position devices on the network. The accuracy is not as good as GNSS systems but is promised by some vendors to be close to 1 meter in three dimensions. In few years we predict WiFi positioning systems to be widespread throughout public spaces such as hospitals, shopping centers, public buildings, libraries, schools and universities. The challenge then becomes what to display the user. There is a clear need to develop knowledge on what kinds of maps and visualizations that works best under different conditions. These conditions are guided by the task the user has when using the map. This paper will discuss some of the envisioned scenarios and use cases of indoor maps when the map displays real-time and social information to the user. Indoor navigation is commonly believed to be one of the most purposeful uses of indoor maps and positioning. This paper argues for other innovative uses with real time and social maps, not intended for navigation in the static indoor space but for exploration of the living indoor space.
